Domestic Partnerships / Civil Unions

Although domestic partnerships have been recognized in our state since 2004, New Jersey recently became the third state in the nation to pass legislation allowing same-sex couples to enter into a civil union. And although this is a new area of the law, what is important right now is the fact that gay and lesbian couples can have many of the same rights and privileges in New Jersey that married heterosexual couples are already entitled to.

However, it is inevitable that they will also have many of the same legal concerns if their civil union does not work out as planned.
